The consortium structure of LIFE-INOFEED has been designed to combine operational expertise, technological know-how, and scientific validation, ensuring both the effective implementation of the project and the strategic exploitation of its results.
Specifically, the consortium includes:
• Three Greek companies, responsible for key roles in the development, construction, and operation of the technological solutions, as well as for the industrial application and commercial exploitation of the produced feed materials. Their participation ensures real-market deployment and practical validation of the system.
• One research institution, which provides scientific support, develops and validates processing methodologies, conducts nutritional and quality analyses, and performs environmental and techno-economic assessments (e.g., LCA, performance evaluation).
• One Belgian company, contributing to the project’s transnational dimension by supporting knowledge transfer, dissemination activities, and the replication and scaling-up strategy at the European level.
The consortium is characterized by strong role complementarity, close research to industry integration, and a clear orientation towards to technological maturity, market uptake, and long-term scalability.

HMU is the largest higher education institution on the Island of Crete, Greece, operating in 6 different campuses, with over 18,000 students and 1,000 staff members. The Special Account of Research Funds (ELKE-HMU), which is the body responsible for the management of research activities, has invested over 15 M€ in infrastructure during the past 10 years and has managed funding of over 40 M€ during the past 5 years.
The Laboratory of Natural Resources Management and Agricultural Engineering (NRMAE) of the Department of Agriculture of HMU is directed by Professor T. Manios. Since his appointment as head of the laboratory in 2005, NRMAE has implemented over 50 research projects with a total funding of more than 12 M€, including 4 Life / Life+, 1 FP7, 1 Horizon, 5 EEA Grants, 4 Interreg, 1 Urban Innovation Actions, 12 National from the Greek Secretary for Research and Technology (as partner), 5 from GSRT as Subcontractor to SME, 4 from Municipalities and Regions and numerous from private companies. As a result of these projects, NRMAE has a joint record of over 150 publications with over 4,000 citations in the wider field of agricultural science and applications. NRMAE currently occupies 2 post-docs, 3 PhD candidates, 4 graduate students and 3 technicians.

Inagro has a long history in the field of agricultural research: since its start in 1956, the number of research topics has continuously expanded, making Inagro the largest centre for applied agricultural research in Belgium, with 222 employees (52% male and 48% female). Today, Inagro focuses on agriculture and horticulture in the broadest sense, working across the entire value chain and its connections with nature, the environment and society.
As a knowledge partner and centre of expertise, Inagro carries out applied and practice-oriented scientific research for the professional sector and the agrifood complex, for the community, the provincial services and all policy levels. Our future-oriented strategy integrates food production, including functional food, animal feed, biofuel, fibers and bio-refining.
The Insect Research Center is a large pilot scale research infrastructure with six climate-controlled rooms. The research focuses on high quality primary production of the yellow mealworm and black soldier fly. Inagro’s Energy and Circular Economy department has extensive experience in energy measurement for both conventional and renewable energy sources, at small and large scales. These insights are actively applied through our energy advisory services, supporting farms in improving energy efficiency and sustainability.
In short, Inagro will evaluate the onsite solar drying unit under Belgian climate conditions and with local matrices. Inagro’s Energy and Circular Economy department will assess the unit’s energy efficiency and compare it with existing alternatives. In parallel, the Insect Research Centre will explore synergies with semi-industrial insect farming and evaluate the Manna insect farming units.
